On a hill a few kilometers from the sea, Loreto. Capital of Marian devotion, the city is famous in the world because inside the Basilica is kept the Holy House, "home" of the Virgin Mary, whose walls, according to tradition, this place would be transferred from Nazareth in 1294 . Within these walls of stone, blackened by time and oil lamps, now seven centuries is concentrated devotion of millions of faithful and pilgrims. But Loreto is also a place unique in the world for artistic and cultural heritage secure within its walls. Around the small sacred building was erected, towards the end of '400, the great Basilica of exquisite late Gothic and Renaissance architecture, and recommended a thorough examination. The Holy House, by which the feature is shining icon of the Madonna and Child , is protected externally by the Marble, the work of extraordinary beauty, designed by Bramante in 1509. It overlooks the whole, as a protective majestic pavilion, the great dome of Giuliano da Sangallo frescoed by Cesare Maccari. Suggestive interest in the Basilica the frescoes of the fourteenth and fifteenth century by a crowd of painters of Umbria-Marche school, and then in the right transept frescoes by Luca Signorelli and the magical outlook Melozzo from Forlì. Do not miss visiting the Hall of the Treasury, to complete the "Life of Our Lady of the prophets and of the Sibyl", a masterpiece of Pomarancio. Outside the basilica, the early sixteenth century, Sansovino and Antonio da Sangallo the Younger realized that the Apostolic Palace restricts to two thirds, the Piazza della Madonna, whose center is the Fontana Maggiore (1604-14) by Maderno. The ground floor houses the Palace sick pilgrims, on the upper floor are located the Archbishop, the Historical Archives Museum and Art Gallery. In the back of the Basilica, Porta Marina entrance is on the way to the city by sea. From the gardens you can admire the beautiful and solemn round apses, surmounted by a walkway that lodges in 1487, Baccio Pontelli, papal military architect, had built to defend the shrine, making it a veritable fortress.
